Finding Your Purpose in Life: Are You Living Your Dreams?

Finding Your Purpose in Life: Are You Living Your Dreams?
“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” – Mark Twain

Have you ever asked, “What is my purpose?”

Sure you know you can work on Wall Street, or be a dog surfing instructor, or an astronaut, or a fortune cookie writer, or a teacher, or even as a dominatrix, but are any of these choices really going to lead you to a life of fulfilling happiness?

There are so many options. How do you know which one to choose?

“You know you’re on the right path when you’re not in a position where you feel you have to negotiate your sense of integrity. You don’t feel like you have to compromise who you are. It feels right. It doesn’t feel like you are losing life or yourself. You are not betraying yourself.” – Caroline Myss

So let’s ask ourselves this important question right now.

Have you betrayed yourself?

Have you taken that job selling batteries because your girlfriend persuaded you that the only way to success was by climbing the corporate ladder? Or are you fearing changing your major all because your Dad decided you would become an engineer the day you were born?

“Some people die at 25 and aren’t buried until 75.” – Benjamin Franklin

If you have betrayed yourself, the important thing is that you have more awareness than a butterfly brain. This means you have the willingness to get back on track to your life’s purpose. You must realize from this point forward that you are responsible for all your choices. Not your girlfriend. Not your Dad. You. You are the only one who is going to live out these choices so you might as well choose the path that invigorates your soul.

There are studies that observed what was going through the minds of those on their death beds. Surprisingly things like fast cars or more sex were irrelevant. They didn’t even come into play. The only thing that truly mattered was your lasting impact on this world. Is this world a better place because you were here or a worse place? Are you regretful because you hurt people or did you find your purpose and contribute your unique gifts to this world? Those that contributed the most died with a smile and those who hurt others left a continuous cycle of pain behind.

“We are faced with two challenges. We have to find ourselves and we have to lose ourselves. We find ourselves when we discover our purpose. We lose ourselves when our purpose becomes bigger than us.” - John Maxwell

Each and every one of us posses talents within that can be replicated by no one. We are put on this planet to discover our talents and develop them to the best of our ability.

“Don't die with your music still in you.” – Wayne Dyer

If you feel completely lost remember this:

“If you have life, you have purpose.” – Caroline Myss

No matter how lost you are, you can always get back on the path to your purpose. It’s never too late. The best thing you can do in the meantime is to get in touch with your inner wisdom by meditating and living in the present daily. These practices will direct you closer to yourself and your purpose.

“Within you lies a piece of God that instinctively knows what to do and how to be.” – Joel Osteen

Once you walk the path you’ll run into some harsh realizations along the way. Like how long it might take or the ridiculous amount of time you have to expend. But that’s not really an issue because you love it. You are going to do what you love. If you were born for this, why would you stop.

“Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.” – Earl Nightingale

You can’t let stories of the Tiger Woods in this world deter you from your path. Just because he picked up his first club before the age of two doesn’t mean your legacy can never on an equal par (pun intended). To give you some perspective, Dashrath Manjhi (http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/man-single-handedly-carved-road-mountain/) single-handedly carved a road through a mountain for his people for 22 years using only a sledge hammer, a chisel, and a crowbar. Just like him you might have to endure immense pain as you slog through job after job to get to your deepest purpose, but that’s what the journey is all about. Trust your journey and stay patient because God has serious plans for you. There is nothing worse than betraying yourself.

You have extraordinary treasures hidden within you. Bringing forth those treasures takes work and faith and focus and courage and hours of devotion. We simply do not have time anymore to think so small." - Elizabeth Gilbert
